Snowless snow day

The phone rang at 7am. I was sound asleep and very confused. I thought it was the middle of the night and that someone was calling to give me bad news. (It’s happened before and I’ve never lost that fear of the phone ringing at odd times.)

It was my sister. Schools have shut down in their district – they’re not too sure why since there’s no storm – and both her and her partner cannot miss work today. Auntie Martine is called to the rescue.

So it’s going to be a day of Legos, X-box, videos, macaroni and cheese and Lite Bright (one of my gifts to them for Christmas. I go for the retro stuff).

I’ve had plenty of snow days in my childhood, but I don’t remember schools closing because of the cold. Then again, nobody in our neighborhood ever drove to school, so the road conditions didn’t affect the decision to open the schools or not.

Whatever the reason, I’m sure my nephews are thrilled, just as we were when we heard the name of our school district on the radio, waiting for a confirmation that we could stay home for the day.
