You Mac heads tell me something: Last July, I got an iPod Photo, 20GB, a few weeks after it showed up on the market.
If I had waited 3 more months, I could have gotten an iPod video with 30GB of space. That’s 10 GB more for the same price.
Why on earth did they release the iPod Photo then, if they knew that 4 months later, they’d get a new and improved model out? Am I missing something?
I’ve been considering the purchase of my first Powerbook but this kind of commercial practice does not encourage me to make the big switch (yeah, I’m still on a PC). When is the right time to buy their precious technology?
MacRumors.com has a buyers’ guide that advises when to buy based on the time between Apple product refreshes. Since they just updated the Mini and the iMac and all the iPods, the next major refresh is Power Macs and PowerBooks. There’s a media event next week on the 19th coinciding with a pro photography show in NY, and I’m betting that’s it.

Pour ton ipod, tu l’as acheter alors que le ipod photo existait depuis un petit moment. Le temp de vie d’un produit APPLE est d’environ 6 � 9 mois. Donc tu l’as acheter en millieux de vie. Personne ne peux pr�voir d’avance ce que APPLE sortira, les rumeurs pour le derniers apple expo parlait d’un powerbook et un powermac, on a eux un ipod nano et un t�l�phone ipod. L’�v�nement de cette semaine ne voyait pas plus l’arriver de nouveau imac. Le ipod vid�o lui a �t� d�mentis pas IPAPY plusieur fois et les rumeurs de ipod vid�o flotte dans l’air depuis la cr�ation du ipod. Donc oui d’ici 10 ans il y aurat un ipod sans fil, holographique, qui par un faisseau laser vas shooter les image dans mon cerveau direct avec l’impression que j’ai un �cran imax devant moi. Il sera GPS2.0, firewire 3200, usb 4.0 (apr�s l’�chec cuisant du usb 3.0) WIFI 802.11 N+XX, WIMAX allouette et sera proposer en version Ren�-charle dion, stargate et Monsieur spock.
Pour ton powerbook, tu viendras me voir.

Same thing happened to me when I bought my 1.5Ghz Powerbook, about 2 months later they released the 1.67Ghz version. It was a minor pain, but I got over it pretty quickly. I love my ‘Frank’ *:)

The best time to buy is usually after a major revision has been announced, any upgrades after that are likely to be incremental like the speed bump that caught me out.
As AJ points out, Apple have an event scheduled for the 19th and the anticipation is that new Powerbooks are on the cards. I’d wait until after the 19th to see how it plays out.
You won’t regret buying one, they rock.
On the other hand, this is why it’s so great to buy such things on eBay – I got « last month’s model » 40gb iPod for the price of a current 20gb on eBay, all because they got rid of those 4 buttons. Outmoded showroom models go to eBay, and they’re barely used and in great shape.
Any time’s a good time to buy Apple :-p
Seriously, AJ said all I wanted to say, here’s the buyer’s guide thing he mentioned. Not reliable anymore for the Powerbooks though. Buy at the next upgrade, possibly on the 19th like he said, should give you 8-10 months before the Intel ones ;)
Vraiment frustrant, je te comprends. J’ai achet� un iMac il y a moins d’un mois. Depuis au moins 4 ans que je r�vais de me d�barrasser de mon vieux G3 beige qui n’arrivait plus � faire grand chose, pour entrer enfin dans la modernit�. Mais je repoussais toujours parce que je n’arrivais pas � choisir un mod�le, LE bon mod�le. Voil� que je me d�cide finalement… et trois semaines plus tard, Apple sort le nouvel iMac avec cam�ra, Front Row, remote, mighty mouse et je sais plus quoi, pour moins cher…
Non mais, ils font expr�s ou quoi?
Quelqu’un sait si j’ai des chances de faire �changer mon « ancien » iMac pour le nouveau si j’harc�le suffisamment le service � la client�le de Apple?
Il est vrai que c’est parfois frustrant de voir Apple sortir de nouveaux produits pour moins cher, plus performant sans crier gare…. Mais Apple doit se prot�ger, il ne peut pas vraiment faire comme Intel qui annonce sa roadmap pour les 2 ann�es � venir. Microsoft et Dell copie Apple sans arr�t.
Apple’s ego sucks. I bought a 6G Mini iPod in May. Now the Nano, which only holds up to 4G, is out on the market and they’ve erased all Mini info on their website! Impossible to find any support info or buying info on their site! As if the Mini never existed. I just get the feeling that I got screwed and they don’t care. UPDATE OR DIE.
Vieille histoire, comme quoi Apple ne change pas et ne changera jamais :
En octobre 1992 j’achetais mon 5e mac, un beau Mac IIvx (68030-32MHz-lecteur cd WOW!) que je l’ai re�u en janvier ou f�vrier 1993 (�a aussi �a change peu).
� peine deux semaines plus tard, Apple sortait le Quadra 650, une b�te � l’�poque (68040-66MHz) pour 750$ de moins.
Ce f�t mon dernier achat Apple avant 2005.
J’ai achet� un iPod 20Go pour le m�me prix qu’un iPod 30Go, il y a 6 semaines de �a…
Plus �a change plus c’est pareil.
Attends… pour ton portable, attends au moins le logo Intel inside.
Apple ne nous m�rite pas comme client.
