When I was a kid, we used to rent a chalet with a group of people. I remember walking in the fields at night and catching fireflies which I would then put in a jar, hoping to make a lantern.
Two years ago, I saw a few fireflies one night in the regional park near our house, but I never saw them again. I don’t see them when I go to the country either. What happened to fireflies? Are they still around anywhere?
Perhaps I could bring them back with these great garden lights. Wouldn’t they make a beautiful present for someone you care for? (Subtle hint)
i see them every summer when we go camping, on the little road near an overgrown field, a little over an hour from montreal. millions of them – it’s gorgeous. i was never one to trap living beings however, and it’s a big no-no for the Kid.
;-P
Yeah, maybe I don’t see them anymore because I have bad fireflies karma. :-(
I did make holes in the lid though.
We have lots and lots of them in Vermont. When I was a kid I used to catch jars-full and bring them inside, and once I just let them loose in my grandmother’s bedroom. Fortunately for me she had a sense of the sublime as well as humor.
I find it odd not seeing many of them here on the south shore. Maybe it’s the sandy soil?
On the otherhand we have more spider than anyone could possibly wish for.
My memory is seeing whole cornfields swarming with them in Minnesota. It was really a sight.
