You do the best you can

Every day I read a lot of blogs about a variety of subjects, but if you were to ask me what I read about the most, my answer would have to be screenwriting and gadget/techno stuff.

So I get quite excited when I find a single post that combines those two interests, like I did at The Artful Writer yesterday. He compares writing a screenplay to building a device like the iPod or the Cube:

« When youre building your device (or writing your script), you do the best you can. In the end though, you are quite certain that youve done something good. Of course you are. Why would you stop building or writing if you didnt think the device or script were ready?

The hard part is that our certainty sometimes backs the Cube and sometimes backs the iPod. The people we show our work to sometimes praise the Cube, and sometimes curse the iPod.

None of that will ever change the fate of the product.

And so were stuck in a terrible Zen puzzle.

In order to write successfully, we must be certain that we are writing something the right way, even though such certainty is impossible.

We have to believe that were building the iPod.

Even when were building the Cube. »
