« As I’ve gone through life, I’ve found that your chances for happiness are increased if you wind up doing something that is a reflection of what you loved most when you were somewhere between nine and eleven years old. »
Walter Murch in The Conversations: Walter Murch and the art of editing film.
Between nice and eleven years old, what I loved most was making up elaborate scenarios for Barbie and her buddies, and creating plays in the basement for the family and neighbors to watch. I guess I’m in the right business.
Between nice and eleven…
Plese leave the typo, it’s so… nice!
Heh heh… too late! I caught it before you commented. I did think it was kind of nice too. ;-)
Damn! I made the same mistake twice and only saw it now! Ok fine, I’m leaving it in…
That’s the best book about filmmaking that I’ve read in years.
Between 9 and 11 was about a hundred years ago for me, so I don’t really remember much beyond « avoid getting beat up by older brother. »
But as I think about it: what I’m doing now is a reflection of what I WAS doing then (sitting in a room — school then, office now — gazing out the window, wishing I were anywhere else but here), but not a reflection of what I LOVED doing.
If only I could remember what I loved doing…
I can’t really remember what I loved doing when I was that age specifically. Lego would certainly be a good educated guess though. Does that mean I should be an architect to be happy? I’m pretty sure hte years of studying would make me unhappy though… hum.
Architecture school isn’t that bad. It’s more late nights than studying.
Legos and Erector sets were my life, so it must be correct. It also stands to reason that my inherent dislike for the rich must come from all those childhood movies where the outcasts triumph over the rich brats.
In the summers I ran around half naked ‘Lord Of The Flies’ style enacting pretend territory wars with neighborhood friends. In the winters I hung out with my best friend Martine (see those naughty Martines). She and I pulled pranks on her handsome older brothers (made balloon animals with their condoms etc), spent days « sampling » her mother’s booze and afternoons reading hundreds of porno mags her older brothers and sisters had stored in the basement. :P
Booze, pranks, porno n’ loosely organized half-naked outdoor activities! Can I actually get paid for that?

Are you kidding? Do that in front of a webcam and people will throw their credit cards at you!
