Adaptation

Ian McEwan’s Atonement is being adapted for the big screen and it’s making the news in the U.K.

It’s the same production company which adapted another McEwan novel, Enduring Love. Not an easy book to adapt and the result wasn’t without its flaws but the performances were great. The famous opening scene though, with the hot-air balloon, was as powerful as it was in the book.

Christopher Hampton, who wrote the great adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons, is working on the screenplay for Atonement. That’s reassuring.

You learn every day

Even when you think you’re bilingual, there are always new things to learn in a second language. While reviewing a screenplay I had just « finished » (these damn things are never finished), I realized that I don’t quite get the difference between unto, onto, on to and into.

Do you fall unto the floor or on the floor?
Do you climb on something or onto something?
Do you grasb unto each other or onto or on to?

It goes on and on and I’m getting dizzy. I better hold on to my chair.
